The format of state license plates was introduced back in the 2000s. Over the years, the vehicle plate system has been continuously improved.
Standard license plates consist of two letters, four digits, and two more letters. The first two letters indicate the regional affiliation of the vehicle — in simple terms, the city where the vehicle is registered. The digits represent the sequential plate number, and the last two letters are the plate series.

A distinctive feature of license plate writing is that only letters of the Ukrainian alphabet that have a similar appearance to Latin letters are used. This is done so that when traveling abroad we have no problems with European traffic police officers trying to correctly write down Ї, Ю, Я or И.
If you look at the background of license plates, it is usually white — this is the background of license plates for regular vehicles. A black background means the vehicle belongs to the military, yellow is for public transit vehicles, and red indicates temporary transit plates.
According to the law, the font, color, size and other external properties of the plates cannot be changed; license plates must be visible from a distance of 25 m.
