DIY Car Maintenance: What You Can Do Yourself and Where You're Better Off Not Messing Without a Pro
Half of scheduled maintenance work can realistically be done in a garage in a few hours — saving you 2,000–5,000 UAH. But there are things where doing it yourself ends up costing significantly more

Anyone who has ever paid a service center to replace an air filter knows the feeling. A mechanic charges 300–500 UAH for work that takes exactly two minutes and requires no tools other than your hands. So the question "what can I do myself?" in Ukraine's used car market in 2026 isn't about a hobby — it's about basic financial hygiene.
But there's a line here that you shouldn't cross without experience. And that line isn't about "hard or easy" — it's about "what happens if I do it wrong."
What You Can Realistically Do at Home
Engine oil and oil filter change. The classic DIY service. You'll need: a jack or ramps, a drain plug wrench, an oil filter wrench, and a container for the used oil. Oil for popular engines like the 1.6 FSI or 2.0 TDI can be found at any auto parts store in Kharkiv, Lviv, or Odesa. Cost of materials — 800–1,800 UAH depending on the oil; a mechanic will charge another 400–600 UAH on top of that for the same job. The only rule — don't overtighten the drain plug and don't forget a new gasket.
Air, cabin, and fuel filters. Air filter — unscrew the housing, pull it out, insert the new one. Cabin filter — on most cars it's behind the glove box or under the dashboard, 5 minutes with no lift required. The fuel filter on carbureted or older fuel-injected cars is also accessible, but if it's inside the tank (most modern models) — that's a different story.
Spark plugs. On a 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine — it's a 20-minute job with a spark plug socket. On turbocharged V6s with awkward placement — it's trickier, but still doable. A set of NGK or Bosch spark plugs for common cars costs 400–900 UAH. The key thing — use a torque wrench so you don't strip the threads.

Brake fluid — inspection and replacement. Checking the level — 30 seconds. Replacing the fluid by bleeding — you'll need an assistant or a special syringe, but it's entirely a home job. DOT 4 fluid costs 150–250 UAH per liter; recommended replacement every 2 years or 40,000 km, regardless of color.
Bulbs, wipers, battery. No commentary needed here — if you can't replace a low-beam bulb yourself, it's a bit embarrassing to pay a mechanic for it. Unless you have a BMW with a headlight where you have to remove the bumper to change the bulb — in that case, a special shout-out to the engineers.
Where It's Better to Stop
Brake system repair. Replacing brake pads — that's still something you can do yourself if you have experience and know what you're doing. But resurfacing or replacing discs, bleeding the system after caliper repair — that's already work where the cost of a mistake isn't measured in money. On a wet road between Kyiv and Boryspil, you won't get a second chance.
Suspension repair. Diagnostics — yes, you can feel and see things yourself. But pressing in bushings, replacing ball joints and tie rod ends — without a press and a wheel alignment stand, driving afterwards is dangerous. Especially if the car is a foreign-plated vehicle with 180,000 km on it, where the suspension has been living its own life.
Everything related to automatic transmissions. Even an oil change on an automatic isn't always a straightforward procedure. The wrong fluid or an incomplete flush can shorten the gearbox's lifespan. Automatic transmission repair is an entirely separate universe with its own specialized mechanics.

Electrical systems, especially on modern cars. Connecting a relay or checking fuses — go ahead. But if the problem is in the CAN bus, the control unit, or something is "glitching" after a battery replacement — without a diagnostic scanner (and the ability to use one) you'll just waste time and nerves.
A Practical Rule That Actually Works
Before taking on any job, ask yourself one question: "If I do this wrong — will I find out immediately or after 10,000 km on the highway?"
An incorrectly installed spark plug will make itself known within 5 minutes of starting the engine. An improperly assembled brake caliper — at the worst possible moment.
- Invest in a basic tool set — 1,500–3,000 UAH will pay for itself after 2–3 DIY oil changes
- For every car there are forums and YouTube channels dedicated to a specific make — there you'll find the pitfalls of your particular model
- Before your first solo service — do it at least once alongside an experienced mechanic or a friend who knows their stuff
The used car market in Ukraine consists mostly of vehicles with 100,000+ km on the clock, where servicing needs to be done regularly and thoughtfully. The question isn't whether you should do it yourself — the question is whether you understand exactly what you're doing. Because the difference between "saved 3,000 UAH" and "got stuck with a 30,000 repair bill" is often just one wrong move.
